Foot of snow and 30 below

That's all I have to say about that

White ballance nightmare Photo on Jan 28, 2009

White ballance nightmare

Or artistically interesting. I shot a bunch of these in Calgary by 9st SW, really long exposures (I don't remember what time of night it was). I don't know that I learned much about photography back then, but you probably have to burn out at least one camera to start to get better.

Of nothing in particular Photo on Jan 28, 2009

Of nothing in particular

This is just some random picture. Why upload it? I don't really know. I must be bored.

Another cat Photo on Jan 28, 2009

Another cat

Actually, the same cat. This one turned out artistically interesting. The problem with point-and-shoot cameras (that most people don't realize) is the aperature is so small, that low-light shooting becomes next-to-impossible, and depth-of-field the same.

But every once in a while a low-light kinda turns out neat.

Cat Photo on Jan 28, 2009

Cat

Hmmm, how'd we end up with another cat picture?

Nawichaywagun Photo on Jan 28, 2009

Nawichaywagun

I probably spelled it wrong. Nawichaywagun is supposed to be cree for 'friend' or 'partner'. This was a wedding gift to my friend Terran.

Skye again Photo on Jan 28, 2009

Skye again

I think this was taken outside at Warren's place. We had just gotten the camera.

Skye Photo on Jan 28, 2009

Skye

I took this with the old Olympus too. One of my favorites.

A man Photo on Jan 28, 2009

A man

I took this in Calgary years ago with the old Olympus camera. I was standing outside the FutureShop just south of Chinook Center. It turned out kinda neat.

Swimming with Mum Photo on Jan 28, 2009

Swimming with Mum

We used to go to the Sundre Pool a lot, and we took James down there once or twice. He was just fascinated by the water coming off the waterslide.

The Butterfly Photo on Nov 20, 2008

The Butterfly

I got lucky with this shot, the butterfly was just out behind the shed by the cabin, and at the top of the gulley, so I got the dark shadow in behind him. I used this photo on the Burntstick Lake Resort website

Burntstick Lake Resort Sign Photo on Nov 20, 2008

Burntstick Lake Resort Sign

A friend of dad's carved this for the lake.

By the beach Photo on Nov 20, 2008

By the beach

The rains in a couple short days caused a lot of the soil by the beach to wash out. Not a fantastic photo, I guess I just wanted to keep it. I know, I'm a digital packrat.

After the flood Photo on Nov 20, 2008

After the flood

The lake was still up a bit, and I think the rain had filled this canoe with water. I just thought it was a neat picture.

Butterfly Photo on Nov 20, 2008

Butterfly

Do you have any idea how hard it is to get a picture of a butterfly up close? I chased this dumb thing for a half hour.

The Longhouse Photo on Nov 20, 2008

The Longhouse

Kindof a neat photo. The Olympus never shot as wide as I would have liked, so I always felt like my results were mediocre. Live and learn, and buy nicer cameras :)

The Yard Photo on Nov 20, 2008

The Yard

The yard up top used to be set up for youth camps. We took the tarps down now, the snow got the best of them, but the longhouse still stands.

James River flood Photo on Nov 19, 2008

James River flood

Same flood, same year, this is 15 miles south, at the James river bridge on the way to Sundre from Burntstick. You can tell we're in the high-class part of Redneck County coz the sign only has 5 bullet holes.

Raven flood 3 Photo on Nov 19, 2008

Raven flood 3

Here is a shot of a sign. The camera aperature is tiny (I didn't really get it at the time) so the photo is a bit blurry (slow exposure). There is easily 8" of water over the bridge.

Raven flood 2 Photo on Nov 19, 2008

Raven flood 2

The great raven flood of '0...hmm what year was it?

Raven flood 1 Photo on Nov 19, 2008

Raven flood 1

We had an awesome flood a couple years ago, the Clearwater and Raven flooded pretty bad. This was taken at the Ricinus campground, the owner is moving trailers out of the campground with his tractor.

Wait, do that again! Photo on Nov 19, 2008

Wait, do that again!

Darrell gave me this dumb pose, but I wasn't ready. I said, "Wait! Do that again..." and he did! Hahaha! "That better not end up on the website..." And it did

Typical Warren Photo on Nov 19, 2008

Typical Warren

It's a good thing we're not wasting actual film. Coz this kind of stuff goes on a lot.

Candid fun Photo on Nov 19, 2008

Candid fun

Same day as the last pic in the album, Skye hauling one of the kids around.

Family get-together Photo on Nov 19, 2008

Family get-together

I think this was 3 years ago, but I can't be certain, there's no date saved with the photo.

One Handsome devil Photo on Nov 19, 2008

One Handsome devil

I've never seen such a handsome fellow!

Flora-ish Photo on Nov 19, 2008

Flora-ish

I think I was just liking the color green at the time. This is in Nelson, and we don't have this particular tree in Alberta. I don't know what it is really, but it sure is green.

Old Building Photo on Nov 19, 2008

Old Building

I think this is in Nelson, I like old buildings, and I like signs.

Nelson street Photo on Nov 19, 2008

Nelson street

I kinda like this shot. The camera is a piece of crap, but every once in a while it spits out something that's not too hard to look at. Color's off but composition is ok.

Nelson signs Photo on Nov 19, 2008

Nelson signs

Again, I think this is Baker Street in Nelson. I just like signs.

Neat Sunset Photo on Nov 19, 2008

Neat Sunset

This is another sunset at Burnstick Lake. My only regret is that up in the yard I have to shoot over the trees and can't get a clear shot of the horizon. Otherwise, it's still an impressive sight.

Another Burntstick Sunset Photo on Nov 19, 2008

Another Burntstick Sunset

We get a lot of nice sunsets at Burntstick.

Baker Street (I think) Photo on Nov 19, 2008

Baker Street (I think)

Shot in Nelson, BC. Just a nice place to take pictures.

Gopher ...coffee Photo on Nov 19, 2008

Gopher ...coffee

This was shot at the drive-thru at Tim Hortons in Rocky. He's got different colors than most of the field gophers I see.

Rabbit parts Photo on Nov 19, 2008

Rabbit parts

Evidence of 2 things: a) the cat ate a rabbit. b) my wife had the camera.

Lake Road Mud Photo on Nov 19, 2008

Lake Road Mud

I think Darrell and I were hauling back an elk and a quad in the trailer behind the Jeep, and they were redoing the Burnstick Lake Road for paving the next spring, and the whole thing was like 5" of gooey clay. I really didn't think we were going to make it up the spring hill (the hill ahead in the picture)

A mountain Photo on Nov 19, 2008

A mountain

Darrell, Phil, and Warren went out hunting for elk by Jackfish a couple years ago. From their camping spot you could see the mountains. Makes me wish I had better equipment back then, but still nice to look at.

Future Politician Photo on Nov 19, 2008

Future Politician

I see either a future politician in this boy, or a car salesman. Hmm, should I warn Warren now?

BLR Sunset Photo on Nov 19, 2008

BLR Sunset

I wish I knew then the things I know about photography now. I would have snapped a full 360 on this one. I'm looking north here at Burntstick (up in the yard). We get some awesome sunsets there in the summer.

A Sign Photo on Nov 19, 2008

A Sign

Did I mention we have a morbid fascination with signs? This isn't even a good one, yet we have a picture of it. Someone should take our camera away...like the camera police...ya.

Proof! Proof I say! Photo on Nov 19, 2008

Proof! Proof I say!

Whenever Dan comes to Alberta, we need to ensure there was proof of his visit. This proof also includes proof of his mother's visit :) Thank goodness it's blurry, I appear to have a dumb look on my face.

A dead rodent Photo on Nov 19, 2008

A dead rodent

Now this one I can pin on my wife. Not the death of the rodent, that was the cat. The picture I mean. Why post a dead rodent to my website? To answer that, we have to first ask: why take a picture of a dead rodent to begin with? To answer THAT, you'll have to ask my wife...

Butterfly Photo on Nov 19, 2008

Butterfly

I don't remember taking a picture of this either. I could probably pin this on my wife. Why should she stop at 3000 photos of the cat? :P

Lamp? Photo on Nov 19, 2008

Lamp?

I think this was in Nelson. Looking back, I can see how I was learning framing and composition, etc. Let's hope my photography is getting better...

Young grasshoppa Photo on Nov 19, 2008

Young grasshoppa

I don't remember taking this. Too bad it's out of focus, could have been a nice pic. (now that I look again, I think it's just a little soft)

Stairs on the farm Photo on Nov 19, 2008

Stairs on the farm

Same trip to nelson, I was trying to focus on the stairs behind the tree.

A shed Photo on Nov 19, 2008

A shed

Or something, again on my trip to nelson years ago...

More flowers Photo on Nov 19, 2008

More flowers

I really didn't think I took this many flower pictures. I guess I like flowers.

Indi Photo on Nov 19, 2008

Indi

My friend's little girl a few years ago when I was visiting. Kindof a blaire witch feel...

Flowers Photo on Nov 19, 2008

Flowers

I forget what kind of flowers they were, I just liked them, they're quite pretty.

Fruit farm again Photo on Nov 19, 2008

Fruit farm again

Same fruit farm. I have a whole bunch of these I just need to put somewhere. Nothing really special about it, just filler.

Fruit farm in BC Photo on Nov 19, 2008

Fruit farm in BC

Just some random shot at a fruit farm near Ainsworth Hot Springs. I was on vacation in Nelson at the time visiting my friend Terran, and I had my little olympus camera along with me. A person just gets desperate to shoot pictures I think, and being on 'vacation' just kinda justifies the trigger finger.

Sleepover at grandpa's Photo on Nov 19, 2008

sleepover at grandpas

This is from a while ago. Every once in a while I see the grandparents come up with this idea, "let's have the grandkids stay over for the night". It's usually a full year before they get the same idea again...

What is this bug? Photo on Nov 19, 2008

bug

If you can tell me what this is, you win a prize...

Dead birds Photo on Nov 19, 2008

dead birds

Don't ask.

Stairs in Nelson Photo on Nov 16, 2008

nelson-stairs

Hmmm. Nelson is built on a hill. More like a mountain, really. Dunno why I took this, sometimes it's strange what one will do when one has a camera.

The Bionic Man Photo on Nov 16, 2008

bionic

This came out of an issue of Popular Science, and I couldn't really believe what I was reading at the time. I had to take a picture of it. You can read the original article here.

Building in Nelson Photo on Nov 15, 2008

nelson-church

This place I think used to be a church in Nelson, and was sold to these folks a couple years ago. I think they were turning it into a restaurant or something (it was a couple years ago).

Perch at Burntstick Photo on Nov 15, 2008

perch

I don't remember when I took this, the perch in the spring are plentiful. This was taken right off the dock. Nothing spectacular about it, I just like the fish.

Salt lamp HDR Photo on Oct 21, 2008

salt lamp

This is an actual bracketed image converted to HDR and tonemapped with Photomatix (highly recommended). The image was a test, normally a long exposure would give the room a proper exposure and blow out the salt lamp, but the hdr revealed the detail nicely.

Not exceptional but still fun :)

Fun with clouds Photo on Oct 21, 2008

fun with clouds

This is a bit of a pseudo-hdr conversion done with lightroom. I've described the technique on another photo, and was just trying it out again.

Grass Photo on Oct 21, 2008

wideangle grass

...the legal kind. I'd never had wide-angle capabilities before, so I was just kinda playing around. I think it's a fun photo.

Bull elk Photo on Oct 20, 2008

elk

That's just how talented I am :) I toiled in the wild for days until I encountered a picture-perfect herd of bull elk, and then charmed them into posing for me. Actually I trespassed across half of some dude's field and poked my 55mm lens through the mesh of the fence. The shot turned out ok though :)

Nice horizon Photo on Oct 20, 2008

sun

This was taken on the first day I got the 30D. I think I tried an HDR conversion on this at some point, but without the high global contrast, it lost some of it's dramatic appeal.

Losers unite! Photo on Oct 20, 2008

losers

There should be a law against some people getting together... :)

My first picture Photo on Oct 20, 2008

first photo

This is the first image I took when we got the Canon 30D. When you have a new camera, you are desperate for something to take a picture of. In some cases (as is evident in this picture), you don't need anything at all to shoot at. Just pull the trigger...

A little Nelson humor Photo on Oct 20, 2008

nelson joints

Or, possible, a little google maps humor?

Nasty cloud Photo on Oct 20, 2008

storm

This is a panorama from my olympus that I shot out by Horberg, 20 minutes west of Rocky Mountain House. We get fun storms out that way :)

Downtown Calgary Photo on Oct 20, 2008

downtown calgary

...at night. I would have killed for a decent camera. The olympus did well, but it was far from pro. Everyone's gotta start somewhere :)

Blur on a bike Photo on Oct 20, 2008

blurry

For some reason I have about 300 blurry photos taken in calgary at night. You know, the 'experimental' kind where it's odd streaks of tail lights in some organic fashion, indicative of a camera that is unable to capture anything less than blurry at night, and equally indicative of a human who is completely unable to hold the camera still in a moving vehicle at exposure times of more than a half second? Ya, that kind of photo. (I hope you're picking up the sarcasm here, I really have a lot of blurry photos from this particular 'shoot').

Anyway, as chance would have it, every once in a while you get some random 'interesting' photo from one of those blurry photo shoots. If you can't tell, (you know coz it is slightly blurry), it's a dude on a bike :)

The world at my fingertips Photo on Oct 20, 2008

fingertips

I did this years ago for a little flash project. I actually animated the globe in flash (but I can't find it now). This I think was my first composition ever. I did all the highlights and shadows on and around the globe manually. Considering I'm not an artist, I think it turned out relatively convincing.

Cat in truck Photo on Oct 20, 2008

cat

I open the door, and there's the c.a.t. I think cats naturally emit some kind of pheromone that causes humans to become stupid and reach for the camera.

Then I think, "I wonder how many millions of feet of film were spent on cats?"

Funny duck Photo on Oct 20, 2008

funny duck

I looked up this funny duck in the bird book at the lake. I can't remember what he is. Same colors as a common loon, but shaped like a duck. They make funny noises and fly funny so I call them 'funny ducks'.

Beautiful Burntstick Photo on Oct 20, 2008

This photo is taken on the way to the summer village. I had to stop and shoot a couple, the colors are amazing.

Gotta love Burntstick Lake. :)

Cat > Truck, Truck > Cat Photo on Oct 20, 2008

cat jeep

Cats do dumb things. Dumb humans take pictures.

Ant war Photo on Oct 20, 2008

Ant war

Now this is an interesting photo. I took this a couple years ago, we were at the gravel pit by James River collecting bearberry. I look down and there is a miniature war happening on this rock, in fact, the rock in the picture is the exact convergence point of one set of black ants, and one set of red ants. I sat there for about 10 minutes and watched them battle it out, it was fascinating. Before we left (a bit later) I checked, and the front of the battle was still on that rock.

The Cabin Photo on Oct 20, 2008

I just like this picture, we're pretty proud of the cabin :)

Cat in a box Photo on Oct 20, 2008

I laughed when I saw this bumber sticker. This was taken on Bowen Island.

A dusty road Photo on Oct 20, 2008

Nothing really special about this photo. It is taken facing west towards the Dovercourt Hall, in the evening. The backlit poplar trees give a neat green color, adding to the interesting contrast.

Bowen causeway Photo on Oct 20, 2008

Bowen causeway Photo on Oct 20, 2008

Another picture of the Bowen Island causeway. Actually, it supports the majority of the island's foot traffic.

Killer swan Photo on Oct 20, 2008

swan

The causeway on Bowen Island separates this little bit of water from the Pacific. The swan in this picture is quite lovely, but it's actually the cause (or was at the time) of some controversy. See, it liked to attack people...

Causeway Photo on Oct 20, 2008

causeway

I went to visit my good friend Terran on Bowen Island. It's a nice place to take pictures. I notice now it's hard to tell what's in focus through a little digital camera view-finder. I'm not even sure that I took this with the Olympus, but it was in the collection, so I'll put the Bowen photos here anyway.

Pups Photo on Oct 20, 2008

pups

Another photo I took with the Olympus. Billy had a couple pups at one point. They were really cute, but about as dumb as dumb gets.

Deer in the evening Photo on Oct 20, 2008

Deer

Nothing particularly special about this photo, I just like the colors. This appears to be just south of Dovercourt. At first I though this was a morning shot, but I'm certain the sun is setting here.

WTF? Photo on Oct 20, 2008

wtf

I took this photo in Chinook Center in Calgary, the movie The Incredibles had just come out. I don't know why I took the picture, it's funny what you'll do when you have a camera.

Color Temperature fun Photo on Oct 10, 2008

Warren's Living Room

In this shot, the white balance setting was close to daytime, so the incandescent lights look really warm, but the tank lights go deep blue. This was shot in Warren's living room, I'm holding the camera on the step for a decent exposure (I think it was 15 seconds or something).

[edit]Haha, I was wrong, it was a half-second exposure...[/edit]

VAFCS Kiosk Photo on Oct 10, 2008

VAFCS screenshot

We (Terran and I) designed and published a kiosk application for the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society a few years back. I designed and coded the interface in Flash 8 at the time, and as far as I know, the application is still serving their Friendship Centre today. Terran sent me pictures of it when he visited out there, I'll have to dig them up.

The image is actually 2 screens, the starter screen (on top) and the calendar (below).

Skye Photo on Oct 10, 2008

Skye

I took this picture of Skye with my old Olympus c720 (I don't even know what we did with it now) out on the back deck of the cabin at burntstick. The exposure range in the image was such that it was very easy to isolate just her face without too much work, and then it just seemed that a monochrome filter was the next obvious step.

Faces in the mountain Photo on Sep 27, 2008

Faces in the mountain

The terrain where we were picking is quite nasty, the shale slips and slides under your feet, and most of the plates we are walking on weight anywhere from 20 to 200 pounds. Anyway, there are almost some faces in this shot.

Little mushroom Photo on Sep 27, 2008

Little mushroom

I shot this little mushroom on the forest floor, it's about as tall as a quarter, but I don't think as tall as a loonie. I took this a little underexposed to get the sun dapple in the background without blowing it out.

Burntstick Lake Road Photo on Sep 24, 2008

BLR Road

I shot this I think the same day as the Clearwater picture, I was playing a lot with HDR images, seeing how the Canon was brand new to us, and shot in Camera RAW format. I haven't done a lot with HDRs since then, but what I have done is fun. :)

Clearwater River Photo on Sep 24, 2008

Clearwater HDR

I took this one in the summer last year just after we got the camera. I could see some little fish swimming around the rocks just below me, but I couldn't find them in this picture.

This is shot with the stock lens that comes with the 30D, the EF-S 18-55mm, and some aberrations are very clear around the treetops when the localized contrast is pushed a bit.

On the potty Photo on Sep 24, 2008

On the potty

Skye has been pottying James for a few months now, and only misses a few pees from time to time. Sticking out his tongue is a new thing as his 2 bottom front teeth just started making an appearance yesterday.

No exit Photo on Sep 23, 2008

No exit

There's just something neat about photographing signs. I took a number of shots of this one with the 50mm f/1.4 to try and get the right shot. I love shooting with the 50mm, it always delivers.

A street Photo on Sep 23, 2008
